- 1864, Peaknuckle, perhaps from Swiss dialect Binokel (Ger.), binocle (Fr.), from Fr. binocle "pince-nez," from M.L. binoculus "binoculars." Taken as a synonym for bйsigue "bezique," the card game, and wrongly identified with besicles "spectacles," probably because the game is played with a double deck.
